Why
Why convert HEIC to JPG?
iPhones save photos as HEIC, which many Windows programs, websites and upload forms refuse. JPG opens everywhere, so converting is the quickest way to share, upload or print iPhone photos.
Guide
Opening HEIC photos on Windows, Mac and iPhone
On Windows 10 and 11
The Photos app only shows HEIC pictures after you install the HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store, and the HEVC extension is usually a paid download. Many other programs, such as older versions of Office and photo editors, still cannot open HEIC at all. Converting to JPG avoids all of this and works for every program and website.
On a Mac
Preview and Photos open HEIC files directly. To save a single copy as JPG, open the photo in Preview, choose File, then Export, and pick JPEG as the format. For many photos at once, dropping them here is faster.
On iPhone and iPad
To make the camera save new photos as JPG, open Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. Photos you already took stay HEIC.
To get JPG files when you copy photos to a computer, open Settings, Photos and set Transfer to Mac or PC to Automatic. The iPhone then converts photos during the transfer.
For upload forms and websites
If a website says your file type is not supported, it usually means it does not accept HEIC. Convert the photo to JPG here and upload the new file instead.

Formats
About the formats
What is HEIC?
HEIC is the HEIF image format using HEVC compression. Apple made it the default camera format with iOS 11 in 2017, because it stores photos at about half the size of a JPG with similar quality. Many Windows programs, websites and upload forms still cannot open HEIC files, which is why people convert them.
What is JPG?
JPG (also written JPEG) has been the standard format for photos since 1992. It uses lossy compression, which keeps files small by discarding detail the eye barely notices. It cannot store transparency, so transparent areas become a solid color.
Questions
Questions and answers
Is it safe to convert my files here?
Yes. ConvertOrino converts your files with code that runs in your own browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, nobody else can see your files, and they are gone as soon as you close the page.
Why are my iPhone photos HEIC files?
Since iOS 11 the iPhone camera saves photos as HEIC by default, because the files are about half the size of JPG. You can switch the camera to JPG under Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible, but photos you already took stay HEIC.
Does converting HEIC to JPG keep the photo quality?
At the default quality of 92 the difference is not visible in normal viewing. JPG files will usually be a little larger than the HEIC originals, because JPG compression is less efficient.
Can I keep the date the photo was taken?
Yes. Untick Remove metadata before converting, and the date taken, camera model and other details are copied into the JPG. Photo apps then sort the picture by its original date. Leave it ticked to remove them, including the location.
Can I convert HEIF files too?
Yes. HEIF and HEIC are the same image format with different file extensions, and both are supported.
Is the HEIC to JPG tool free?
Yes, completely free. There is no sign up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit, because your own device does the work. Very large files are limited by the memory of your device. Phones handle files of a few hundred megabytes, computers handle much more.
Does it work on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows?
Yes. It works in any modern browser, including Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox, on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing needs to be installed.
Is hidden metadata such as location removed?
Yes, by default. Location, camera details and other EXIF data are removed from every converted image. For JPG output you can untick Remove metadata to keep the date taken and camera details instead.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded, the conversion works without an internet connection, which also proves that your files are not sent anywhere.
